Who are the Harlem Wizards and do they play in the NBA?
The Harlem Wizards were created in 1962 by Howie Davis, a legendary sports promoter. His vision for a basketball team was very different to the norm.
The Harlem Wizards were created in 1962 by Howie Davis, a legendary sports promoter. His vision for a basketball team was very different to the norm. Howie wanted to merge entertainment and sports, which pretty much every NBA basketball team already does, but the Wizards do it in a unique way. He wanted to do better than the Harlem Globetrotters, so he created the Harlem Wizards. The Wizards are a professional basketball outfit, but they don't compete with the express purpose of winning – they are there to entertain the crowds, and to get the crowd involved in the action. Since they are professionals, they get paid to play, but nowhere near the salaries of NBA superstars.
For the 2019/2020 season, the Harlem Wizards players were listed according to a series of ‘Units’. These include the Assembly & Special Events Unit, Broadway Unit, Rocket Unit, Showtime Unit, and the Swoop Unit.
* Assembly & Special Events Unit – DP and Blackjack. DP #33 is 6'6" tall and he’s been with the Harlem Wizards since 2003. Blackjack a.k.a. Jack Ryan is 6 feet tall, a Guinness World Record holder and he starred in a major Hollywood flick. He has been with the Wizards since 1997.

The coaches for each of the units are listed in bold above. They include Swoop, Broadway, Showtime, and Rocket. Each of these Harlem Wizards earn a decent salary, but it's nowhere near the tens of millions earned by the top NBA players in the season.
Consider players like Stephen Curry from GSW (Golden State Warriors) who earns $40,231,758, Chris Paul of Oklahoma City Thunder who gets paid $38,506,182, or Russell Westbrook of the Houston Rockets who earns $38,506,482. Each of these is in the ballpark of guys like Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets, LeBron James of the LA Lakers, and Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia 76ers.
