New York Red Bulls Betting Tips, Predictions, and Betting Odds

Last year seemed like it was finally going to be the one where the Red Bulls put it all together and won their first MLS Cup. They set a record for the most points in a season to win their third Supporter’s Shield in the past 6 years, but lost their chance to finally win it all when they lost to Atlanta United in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Using last year’s regular season success, paired with their ultimate failure to win the silverware they wanted, as a rallying cry, the 2018-19 season looked like it could finally be the one to put it all together., and the oddsmakers saw it that way as well, giving them the league’s highest odds to win the cup at +500. Sure, they lost a key piece in midfielder Tyler Adams, (and surprisingly didn’t add a big name replacement) but return almost everyone else of significance, and have a young core that  was bound to improve from last year. So how is at all turning out?

In a word, meh. As of mid-June they are in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference, 7 points off the pace of the Philadelphia Union. They’ve recently put together a nice string of games, and their place in the top 5 of the Eastern table seems pretty remarkable considering Bradley Wright Phillips has only one goal to his name this season. After starting the season as the favorites, they’re currently at +1800 to win the MLS Cup, but just +600 to win the Eastern Conference. (Seems everyone is pretty sold on LAFC taking it all this year.)

New York Red Bulls- 2019 Team

They say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Well, that seems to be the thinking the 2019 Red Bulls took coming into the new year after being the most dominant team in the league during last year’s regular season. Even after they lost Tyler Adams to RB Leipzig, they had enough faith in the squad they had to not go out and find an equally impactful replacement. Perhaps it was the belief that a whole season under coach Chris Armas would be enough to keep the Red Bulls rolling along like they did last year after he took over. So far, not so bad.

The sudden disappearance of Bradley Wright-Phillips from the scoring column is worrisome, and one has to start wondering how much more is left in the tank. But his fellow vet Kaku, after flirting with a move to Liga MX, has come back and kept the Red Bulls going, despite some occasional outbursts that have found him on the sideline. The scoring has come from a slew of new sources, led by Brian White (9 points, 4 G), Daniel Royer (13 points, 3 G), and Alex Muyl (13 points, 2 G).

Their defense (6th in the MLS in goals conceded) is led by Tim Parker and Aaron Long, with team captain and Red Bulls main-stay Luis  Robles holding down the back in goal. They started out the year struggling a bit from their opponents no longer being surprised by the Red Bulls pressing tactics, and thus were exposed during counterattacks. But with Armas changing in their approach, things have settled down and once again, NYRB sends out a consistently tough back line.

Who Were The New York Red Bulls Top Scorers Last Season?

  • Bradley Wright-Phillips: 20 goals, 8 assists
  • Daniel Royer: 11 goals, 2 assists
  • Kaku: 6 goals, 14 assists
  • Derek Etienne Jr.: 5 goals, 1 assists

Who Are The New York Red Bulls Top Scorers Of All Time?

  • Bradley Wright-Phillips (2013-current): 125 goals
  • Juan Pablo Angel (2007-2010): 62 goals
  • Thierry Henry (2010-2014): 52 goals
  • Clint Mathis (2000-2003, 2007): 45 goals

Who Owns The New York Red Bulls?

Um, look at the name.

When they entered the league in 1996, the Red Bulls were the New York MetroStars, and they stayed that way until 2006, when the Austrian energy drink conglomerate decided to get into the MLS game (they had already purchased the Austrian team SV Austria Salzburg) by purchasing the team,. They completely rebranded the team with a new logo, new colors, and most importantly, a new name. The MetroStars were now the Red Bulls.

Who Are The New York Red Bulls Biggest Rivalries?

Following the lead of their hometown baseball, football, and basketball teams, the Red Bulls rivals tend to be Northeastern. The oldest of these is D.C. United, with whom the Red Bulls joined the league and against whom they compete every year for The Atlantic Cup. The two teams have met 87 times across all competitions, with D.C. United holding the edge with a 43-16-34 record against the Red Bulls.

The introduction of NYCFC in 2015 gave birth to the Hudson River Derby. While the hype between the two was a little manufactured at first, the fans didn’t take long to start engaging in trash talking and all out fights. Who says European soccer fans are the only ones who can resort to hooliganism.

What Are The New York Red Bulls Highest Salaries? How Much Is The Club Worth?

According to Forbes, the Red Bulls are currently the 11th most valuable sports franchise in the MLS, with a value of $250 million. While acceptable, there is no doubt some envy at the fact that Atlanta is already the highest valued team in the first year of their existence at $330 million. With a stadium that only holds 25,000, the Red Bulls will never have the same attendance figures as teams such as Atlanta and Seattle, where average attendance is upwards of 40,000 per game. But the up and down seasons of the Red Bulls, and their habit of spending big on aging stars from Europe instead of fostering their own talent, has proven to be OK for attendance I get to see Thierry Henry!0 but not great for performance in the long term.

On the current Red Bulls roster, designated players Bradley Wright-Phillips ($1.38 million/year) and Kaku ($800k/year) are the highest paid, with Aaron Long also bringing home $800K/year as the highest paid non-DP player.

What Are The New York Red Bulls Most Memorable Moments and Greatest Achievements?

The Red Bulls have, as of yet, never won an MLS Cup, but they’ve still had a number of highlights:

New York Red Bulls Fan Profile

In their 23 years of existence, the Red Bulls amassed an incredibly fervent fan base, led by a collection of supporters groups that have paved the way for newer fan bases in other cities to follow. The first of these groups, The Empire Supporters Club, was formed even before the team began play. With their new stadium in New Jersey, a new group sprouted up in 2005 called the Garden State Ultras, and in 2010 when the club added a bunch of people with Scandinavian descent, so was born the Viking Army Supporters. Red Bull Stadium is proud to give each of these vocal groups their own sections.

There really aren’t any celebrity Red Bulls supporters, but this guy seems to be their number 1 fan.

Red Bulls Arena

Like the New York Giants and the New York Jets, the Red Bulls say they’re from New York, but, in truth, they all play across the river in New Jersey. In fact, the Red Bulls played in the same stadium as the Giants in East Rutherford until 2009. In 2010 however, the good folks at Red Bull bestowed upon the team their own soccer-specific stadium, Red Bull Arena, also in New Jersey, but this time in Harrison. Built to provide a great fan experience, it has a seating capacity of a little over 25,000.

Famous New York Red Bulls Legends

From homegrown stars to European legends coming to the MLS to finish off their careers, the Red Bulls have had their share of legends.

  • Tim Howard/Tony Meola: These two future USMNT fixtures (and local natives) both spent time with the MetroStars/Red Bulls in the beginnings of their careers. Meola made 140 caps for the team starting from day one of the franchise, while Howard used his 97 caps with the team to get a call to join Manchester United.
  • Mike Petke: Another New York native, Petke started his career with the Red Bulls in 1998, and set a club record for number of appearances and minutes played. He would eventually return for two stints as head coach.
  • Clint Mathis: From 2000-2003, Mathis was the face of the franchise, scoring 45 goals in 110 games, including breathtaking sequences like this.
  • Amado Guevara: The 2004 MLS MVP, scoring champion, and three-time MLS All Star, the Honduran midfielder scored 32 goals in 103 games for New York from 2003-2006.
  • Roberto Donadoni: An Italian legend who was brought over to add some legitimacy for the inaugural season of MLS, he gave not only the team, but the league as a whole, some much needed respect. He scored 6 goals in 55 games for the MetroStars.
  • Juan Pablo Angel: Starting with the Red Bulls in 2007, Angel was a scoring machine, captaining the teamto their one and only MLS Cup Finals appearance. He scored a whopping 62 goals in only 102 appearances for the Red Bulls.
  • Thierry Henry: Starting in 2010, the French legend became a Red Bulls and MLS legend during his time with the team. In 122 appearances with the club, he scored 51 goalst o go along with 37 assists.
