New York Yankees

The New York Yankees need no introduction to MLB fans. They are the kings of baseball, even if they aren't the current World Series Champions. That auspicious honor belongs to the Washington Nationals managed by Dave Martinez when they clinched a 4-3 series victory over the Houston Astros in 2019.

The last time the New York Yankees won this auspicious title was back in 2009. Their record under manager Joe Girardi was 40, 27-13, with a 4-2 World Series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies under manager Charlie Manuel. In the years since their World Series victory, the Yankees have not featured at all.

The LA Dodgers

In fact, the teams that ascended the rungs included none other than one of the Yankees' most bitter rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 2017, and 2018, the LA Dodgers played in the World Series, and lost first to the Houston Astros under manager A.J. Hinch (4-3), and later in 2018 they lost to the Boston Red Sox under manager Alex Cora (4-1), in pursuit of World Series victory.

The Oakland Athletics

You may be wondering how many times the Oakland Athletics have featured at the highest levels of the MLB? They're a pretty formidable team, with their first victory coming in 1972 over the Cincinnati Reds, under the management of Dick Williams. They followed up in 1973 with another title, and in 1974 with another title. The Oakland Athletics didn't stop there! They continued with a near-win in 1988 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, with a stellar World Series victory in 1989, and a runner-up position in 1990 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Comparing World Series titles between the Yankees, Dodgers, and Athletics

The New York Yankees are masterclass. Take a look at our sports articles on the performances of the Yankees, and you'll soon see that this team is peerless in MLB. The Yankees are light-years ahead of the competition when it comes to series wins. This franchise has recorded 27 World Series Wins, and 13 losses, the first victory coming in 1923, and the last victory coming in 2009. Their win/loss percentage is .675 – truly spectacular!

The LA Dodgers, otherwise known as the Brooklyn Dodgers in their earlier years, have recorded 6 World Series Wins, and 14 losses. Their win/loss percentage is .300. Their first season victory came in 1955, and their last in 1988. The rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers was always over-the-top. Makes sense, given their proximity in the early years.

The Oakland Athletics are in the top three winningest MLB franchises. If you had to scan the literature, you may want to search for the Philadelphia Athletics, Kansas City Athletics, and the Oakland Athletics. They're the same team. Once again, this explains why there is such bitter rivalry between the Yankees, the Dodgers, and the Athletics.

This team has recorded 9 MLB World Series Wins over the years, and 5 losses. Their win/loss percentage is .643, right up there with the best of them. Their first win came in 1910, and their last win in 1989.

When Will the Yankees Win Again?

It's tough to say, but CBS sports analysts give over/under odds of the Yankees winning a World Series title in the 2020s at 1.5. It's a fair shake. The team has its share of injuries, so a near-term World Series victory is unlikely, but certainly possible. Many sports analysts, myself included believe that the Yankees are well-positioned for a return to the top of the baseball charts with a World Series victory in the early 2020s. This team has done it before, many times, and will do it again!

When Will the Dodgers Win Again?

The Dodgers won a World Series Championship in a short baseball season back in 1981 when just 110 games were played. At the time, winners from the Divisions were split into halves during the postseason. At the time, the Dodgers beat the Yankees in 6 games, thanks largely to Fernando Valenzuela’s heroics.

Their World Series appearances in 2017/2018 were promising, but not enough to overcome their opponents for the ultimate prize. If the Dodgers are to reach the play-offs, it's going to take tremendous effort. In a shortened season, the Dodgers have a checkered history. They finished first in 2015 & 2019, and finished in second position in 2014, 2016, & 2017. Their best chance is to go the full distance with 162 games, and prove that they have what it takes to best the competition.

When Will the Athletics Win Again?

Tough question. They performed supremely well in recent years, winning 194 games in 2 prior seasons. That they had 2 losses in the wild card rounds is unflattering, but a reality that they must contend with. They're looking for a championship win, since they haven't had one for over 30 years.

Fortunately for the A's, they are plenty talented and their skill levels run deep. Athletics starter, Frankie Montas believes that the team has what it takes to make a play for the ultimate prize. But they will have to punch through many walls before they get there…
