In our ongoing series of best-ever NFL players, we're going to take a look at the best NFL linebackers of all time. The role of the linebacker is simple: shut down opposition attacks by defending the goal area against runs. Linebackers use their incredible speed, strength, and size to catch receivers, tackle running backs, pull ball carriers down to the ground, and blast past linemen.

It's an all-encompassing job that is often overshadowed by the attention heaped on quarterbacks. Let's rush some of the NFL betting odds direct to your bet slip!

SAM Linebackers

As an NFL fan, you invariably know that there are 3 key linebacker positions with the 4-3 format. These include a SAM, MIKE and WILL. The strong side linebacker position is posted on the strength-side of the defense. On this side, there are the greatest number of blockers, and this linebacker is the chief run defender among all the linebackers.

This position requires the linebacker to run with plenty of coverage with tight ends. Guys like Joshua Perry performed really well in this position.

MIKE Linebackers

The middle linebacker position, otherwise known as MIKE is akin to the QB of the defense, since this linebacker is stationed in the middle of the pack. This player is about 3 yards – 5 yards out from  line of scrimmage. As the QB of the defense, MIKE is second behind SAM as the run defender.

To this end, this linebacker’s primary responsibility is to defend the weak side linebacker, otherwise known as WILL by maintaining an impenetrable defense on the second level. Players like Denzel Perryman served well in this capacity.

WILL Linebackers

The weak side linebackers are positioned off the line of scrimmage, about 3 yards - 5 yards out. They are set at approximately the same depth as MIKE linebackers. These guys have to be lightning fast, because they oftentimes chase the play from the back end. WILL linebackers have to hit the pitch hard and fast, blasting through traffic, bulldozing blockers, slamming the offensive lines and making plays.

Top WILL linebackers like Kyle Emanuel reign supreme. These are the smallest and lightest of the linebackers, typically between 5'10" and 6 foot tall, designed for explosive speed, power and plenty of athleticism.

To better understand where the linebacker fits into the broader scheme of things, let's quickly take a look at the Offensive Players, and the Defensive Players:

Offensive Players
