Tennis Stars of the 80s - Tennis Stars of the 90s - Tennis Stars of the 2000s

Tennis is a grand sport. In fact, it’s my personal favorite and the reason I became a tennis coach in the US and the UK. I was heavily influenced by several tennis superstars over the years, chief among them – my personal hero – Ivan Lendl. There was something uniquely brilliant about Ivan Lendl. He was quite possibly the hardest training tennis player of his era. Lendl often said that you have to train so hard that you can’t walk home. While many of my contemporaries preferred the likes of Boris Becker, Andre Agassi, Mats Wilander, Stefan Edberg, John McEnroe (yes, they overlapped), I was a devout Ivan Lendl fan.

In fact, such was his masterclass that he actually coached one of the greatest-ever tennis superstars and then competed against him too. I’m referring to the inimitable Pete Sampras. When ‘Pistol Pete’ was just 19 years old he went head-to-head against Ivan Lendl and beat him in the U.S. Open Championship - 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 4-6, 6-2 to advance through to the semi-finals. Lendl’s list of conquests was sublime. He won all the tennis championships bar one – Wimbledon. No matter how hard he trained; no matter how far into the tournament he advanced, he could never, ever win Wimbledon. It eluded him and is arguably his greatest regret in an otherwise stunning and phenomenal tennis career that spanned decades.

Now, let’s list the tennis superstars of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s and their incredible achievements. You’ll soon see why the heroes of today are compared to the greats of yesteryear. These are the men and women who epitomize excellence in the sport. They have proven themselves to be true champions; icons and legends of the game. We pay tribute to the greatest tennis superstars of yesteryear, beginning with the one and only Ivan Lendl.
